Product Development Technician – Santa Rosa, CA

Cannabistry’s Product Development team brings innovation to life. The Product Development Technician plays two critical roles to support the team develop demonstrably better products.  First, he/she supports the lead product developer in executing formulation and process development from the lab benchtop through pilot plant scale-up.  This may also include executing shelf-life studies in partnership with the Quality team.  Second, during the product development process he/she leads design, execution and analysis of consumer product testing to obtain feedback related to product efficacy, sensory attributes and other desired market research. Specifically: 

Product Development

  • Collaborates with product developers to execute benchtop development, pilot plant scale-up, specification development and data collection.
  • Ensures proper documentation for all project work is completed and stored in compliance with internal standards.
  • Design and analyze shelf-life studies to validate for safety, efficacy, sensory, and stability over desired lifetime of product.
  • Maintains inventory to prevent out-of-stock or out of date ingredients.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves processing issues with support from lead product developer on projects.
Consumer Sciences
    • Collaborate with Sales and Marketing teams to recruit participants for consumer testing of cannabis-infused products and organize a statistical representation of the consumer target market for each product category
    • Develop basic methods, theories and approaches used in the execution of sensory evaluation and consumer testing research
  • Design and develop surveys/questionnaires, in order to gain specific insights on product efficacy, flavor and overall performance.
    • Manage execution of product testing research with adherence to local CDPH and Cannabis regulations.  This may include moderating focus groups and orchestrating or coordinating In Home Use Tests (IHUT).
    • Gather and analyze data to report to the Product Development Manager which includes, but is not limited to:
      • Statistical analysis of data to help guide product development – primarily control testing across various attributes
      • Finding correlations within tested variables using regressions and other statistical methodology.
      • Finding correlations between specific consumer demographics and product satisfaction.
      • Ability to report results in timely and easily understandable manner.
      • Create visual aids to increase understanding of the material being reported.
  • Manage internal sensory program including development of training materials for employee sensory training.


  • Bachelors or Associates degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related field.
  • Certificate or degree in Sensory or Consumer Science is preferred
  • 2-5 years of experience in CPG, Food and Beverage or Pharmaceutical industry is preferred
  • Experience operating or working in a laboratory environment or pilot plant
  • Understanding of sensory methodology and statistical analysis of sensory data
  • Ability to communicate cross-functionally
  • Effective project and time-management skills, with the ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and enthusiasm for food and implementation of new technologies.
  • Team player, with the ability to inspire and be inspired by many different types of people and roles
